Independent news organization Indigo Publications was founded in Paris in 1981 by journalist Maurice Botbol, who continues to own and run the group to this day. The company publishes five websites and 15 specialist newsletters.

From the outset, Indigo Publications chose to focus on editorially independent, hard-to-obtain news and analysis of interest to decision-makers. Indigo remains independent from any government, political organisation or financial power.

The Indian Ocean Newsletter was the first publication it launched in 1981, with the aim of shedding real light on the political and economic power struggles in East and southern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands.

Over the years, the company launched other publications that took the same approach in West Africa (West Africa Newsletter), North Africa (Maghreb Confidential), and in the Africa mining and energy sectors (Africa Mining Intelligence and Africa Energy Intelligence) and in the global intelligence sector (Intelligence Online).

In 2007, Indigo Publications acquired La Lettre A, newsletter first published in 1978 that specializes in news and analysis of politics and business in France. In April 2011, Indigo Publications launched Entourages an online spinoff of La Lettre A that focuses on relationships in France's corridors of power.
